PENANG GURDWARAS

The gurdwara is the gathering place of the Sikh community. It is a place of worship, but is also an educational and service institution that contains a langar hall where large communal meals are prepared and served for everyone.

There are four doors to enter a Gurdwara. The Door of Peace, The Door of Livelihood, The Door of Learning, and The Door of Grace. These doors symbolize the openness of Sikhs to accept people from all directions and of all backgrounds.

The main sanctuary of the gurdwara houses the sacred scripture called the Guru Granth Sahib. The scripture occupies a place of honor on a raised lectern in the sanctuary.

Vaisakhi is the celebration of Punjabi New Year and to commemorate the birth of Khalsa. It is celebrated either on the 13th or 14th of April every year. To celebrate, Sikhs come together in the Gurdwara to pray, recite Guru Granth Sahib, change the Nishan Sahib (flag with Sikh insignia), sing the holy hymn, prepare meals and eat together.

The oldest gurdwara in the country, Wadda Gurdwara Sahib Penang is 122 years old and will soon be listed as a national heritage site.
