SNAKE TEMPLE FLAME WATCHING CEREMONY

The Flame-Watching Ceremony is carried out annually by Cheng Hoe Seah at the Snake Temple. It is also a ceremony to predict the upcoming economy trend in Penang. Snake Temple was a private temple to worship Qing Shui Zu Shi by the An Xi monk devotees during 1820’s to 1830’s.

Penang Ban Kah Lan Snake Temple also known as Hock Hin Keong, Cheng Hoon Gam was used to worship Qing Shui Zu Shi who is also the main deity in the temple – also known as Chor Soo Kong. He was a Zen Buddhist monk during the Northern Song Dynasty from An Xi County, who prayed for rain during drought to ease people in suffer, heal people with chinese herbs, build bridges and roads for villagers. Hence, he became a famous deity among the An Xi County after his demise. 

Snake Temple was a private temple to worship Qing Shui Zu Shi by the An Xi monk devotees from around 1820’s to 1830’s. Around the year 1836, the belief of worshipping Qing Shui Zu Shi became popular among the Penang Hokkien Community. It is also the origin place where Cheng Hoe Seah obtained its incense. The Flame-Watching Ceremony is carried out annually by Cheng Hoe Seah at the Snake Temple. It is also a ceremony to predict the upcoming economic trend in Penang.
