WESAK DAY
Buddhists celebrate Wesak Day in May, marking Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and passing. While these events happened at different times, they’re traditionally commemorated on the first full moon of May.
On Wesak Day, devotees visit temples to offer prayers, chant, and practice charity. A unique ritual is the “Buddha bathing,” where devotees pour water over a statue, symbolising the cleansing of negativity.
In Penang, the procession begins in the evening from Burmah Road to inner George Town, making a round to the starting point. Floats are decorated with flowers and bright lights, accompanied by singing and chanting. Others will gather along both sides of the roads to witness the passing of brightly decorated floats, while some will offer prayers and raise the Buddhist flag.
For the year 2024, Penang state has organised Penang Wesak Celebration Day 2024 at the Wisma Malaysian Buddhist Association.
